Lionel Joins the Wrong Team
Lionel stepped into the prosecutorâs office uncertainly. He looked over to the left and saw Sara Yoder at her station, gathered that she was the receptionistâalthough because of recent advances in egalitarian office layout and furniture arrangement, this was hard to tellâand made his way over to her.
âGood morning,â he said.
âGood morning,â she replied. âHow may I help you?â
âI wanted to see the prosecutor, if that were possible. If not, I would like to make an appointment to see him, as soon as possible.â
âI see,â Sara said, standing up. âWill he know what it is regarding?â
âNo, I donât believe so,â Lionel said. What is a girl like that doing working in a place like this? âIf he is at all available, I am asking for fifteen minutes.â
âI will check,â Sara said. She made her way over to Connorâs office, while Lionelâs gaze followed her carelessly. He stood up, jingled the change in his pockets absentmindedly, and then sat down again.
Sara, in the meantime, was having trouble communicating with Connor. She said that there was a gentleman there to see him, if possible. She said that she had recognized him from a video, which she had, but was having trouble describing the video to Connor. âYou know,â she said, half-whispering, afraid that Lionel might hear her, even though he was way across the office, âthe man who got told off by the daughter of that attorney you are up against?â Sara had already decided that she would not let anyone in this vile office know that she knew anybody related to any of this.
Connor laughed out loud. âPussy man? Of course I will see him. I wonder what could possibly bring him here? Show him in.â In addition to his other traits, Connorson was an insatiable gossip. He thought that whatever Lionel had to come to see him about, it would be good for a story or two.
But Lionel, whatever else he appeared to beâvain and conceited and effeminate would about cover itâwas not stupid. He was there for purposes of his own, and revenge would have been a reasonable guess, and he had done enough research on Connorson to bait the hook well.
âI gather,â he began, âthat you have seen the video?â
âThe video?â Connorson replied. âYes, yes, I have seen it.â
âI will not insult your intelligence by trying to pretend that my motives in this are white and pure, like snow in the high country. I do think that . . . that female needs to be taken down a few notches. And I think that I have something in my possession that might help to accomplish that. In your hands, I mean.â
âYou have my interest,â Connorson said.
âYou may have inferred from the video that she and I were acquainted prior to that time?â
âYes, I did. Boyfriend/girlfriend?â
âNothing as fixed as that. I took her out for coffee two or three times. I might have called them dates, she might not have.â
âSo this is all very interesting .
